Florida Louisiana Heron

When I was a kid, this bird was called the Louisiana heron. And dinosaurs walked the Earth.
Now it's the tricolored heron. And the dinosaurs, except for me (and a few of my friends), are gone.
I am in Florida for a spell, digging the bird scene, working the room, pressing the flesh, watching out for mouse ears, driving 35 mph in the fast lane 'cause that's how they roll here in the Sunshine State.

I hope you are warm and toasty wherever YOU are.

"warm and toasty," - HAH!

It was -12 degrees at the beginning of the OOS winter bird trip at The Wilds yesterday. As in TWELVE degrees BELOW zero. Actual temperature, that is, not including the winds, which were brutal.

It was so cold, Jimmy Mac wore a hat and gloves.

I still haven't thawed out. And you are in Florida, you, you - you slacker!

And while you're down there, you ARE looking around for really BIG woodpeckers, right!???

Kathi,

Thank you for confirming my conviction that only insane people would brave the Wilds when the forecast high was to be in the low 20's. We always say it's 20 degrees colder there than in Whipple. It was zero in Whipple at sunrise, and I shuddered to think what it was at The Wilds, where the winds have nothing to stop them. A full space suit with a wet suit underneath would not have been overkill, huh?

It looks great! It was zero in Whipple at sunrise, and I shuddered to think what it was at The Wilds, where the winds have nothing to stop them. More reference: Live in Tampa, FL
