The chippies got in this morning, according to my sources at Indigo Hill. Eating suet dough they were.
Red-winged blackbirds, common grackles, and brown-headed cowbirds all got in a week or so ago. With these first two waves of arrivals, I'm left to wonder: can the blue-gray gnatsnatchers be far behind?

How fascinating... Over here on the (east) coast--truly, are we all that far apart geographically?--fox sparrows leaving are portents of spring (they've been gone for some weeks now), some chippies have been here all winter, and the tree sparrows are just arriving in numbers here as well.

We had our first Fox Sparrow today and it's supposed to hit 80 by the weekend! Woo-hoo!
ReplyDeleteAre any of those chipping sparrows mine? I fed about 100 of the litle pigs all winter. Now there is hardly enough to fill up the tray feeder. I've counted 18 sparrows in it at one time. Other than the chippies, I had one song sparrow and one oregon junco but haven't seen either of them in over a month.
ReplyDeleteMy new yard birds are pine siskins which are feeding on niger with the lesser goldfinches. I also have black-chinned humming birds and probably some ruby throats which just pass through here. The black-chinned hang around and breed here.
