NPR!
Hey! I was on NPR's All Things Considered today in a story about kids and birds by Melissa Block. I took Melissa and her family birding at Huntley Meadows in northern Virginia on Memorial Day weekend. What fun!
I listened to the piece on the radio with about 25 other people as we sat in the dining room of the Hog Island Audubon Camp in Maine. It was surreal to hear my voice coming out of the radio right next to all of those familiar NPR voices.
After the piece aired, we finished dinner and then we walked over to The Fish House where I gave a talk about The Young Birder's Guide to the folks here at Hog Island.
If you missed the story's airing, you can listen to it here.
What a day....
Heard it . . had to wait 10 minutes at the Grocery Store for the story to play but was awesome! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteGreat job, keep up the good work! You are wonderful with kids! Enjoy the sunshine today!!!
ReplyDeleteListening to it now, thanks to another birding blog. What a great segment!
ReplyDeleteWe used to take our kids to Huntley Meadows when we lived closer to it. They're not birders now, but they appreciate them more than their friends do.
Wonderful piece, Bill! Excellent job.
ReplyDeleteExcellent Bill!
ReplyDeleteThe NPR segment was fantastic. You had such a wonderful demeanor and voice with Chloe. And wasn't she a wonder? Just like her mom.
ReplyDeleteYou are one terrific guy. Future generations of birders will thank you for introducing them to birding.
I loved the photo Julie showed of you listening :o) It was great, Bill. That little Chloe is sharp as a tack. I could learn from her! LOL!
ReplyDeleteI heard it last night from the Mecklenburg Audubon listserv. Very cool :o)
Bill:
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful piece! As I listened, I could see you in my mind's eye, bending WA-A-A-Y down to adjust the scope to Chloe's height and helping her enjoy her birding experience to the max. And, what big words for an almost-six-year-old: "intruder" and "turquoise"? Wow, she must be as smart as a whip. It sounds like a perfect day of "Birdin' with Bill."
Thanks for all you do,
~Kathi
How cool! Chloe sounded like she was having such a great time. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool piece, Bill. The next generation needs dudes like you.
ReplyDeleteI sat listening to the bit with a big grin on my face.
I really enjoyed the piece. I've passed this onto friends with young kids.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in birder household and while I didn't always keep up with it, birds held a special place, not only because of their own attractions, but because of the family memories that came with them.
I'm driving home, listening to NPR and I hear Bill Thompson talking about birds and I think, hmmm, is this the same Bill Thomspson who went to Western? Yes, yes it is. Howdy from a long time ago...
