Yes these birds are in silhouette (sorry) and yes they represent four separate (bird) species.
The first person who can correctly identify these four species AND write a separate (and proper) haiku about one of them, wins a copy of my new book Hummingbirds and Butterflies (which I wrote with co-author Connie Toops).
Deadline for entries is Saturday, April 16, 2011. May the best birder/poet emerge victorious!

Loggerhead Shrike
Boat-tailed Grackle
Mourning Dove
Eurasian Collared-Dove
My Haiku:
Dove flies to the west
Dove circles the world in time
Dove that ate the south
Hm... Oggie may have it right with the Loggerhead Shrike, but just in case-
Northern Mockingbird
Boat-tailed Grackle
Mourning Dove
Eurasian Collared-Dove
This grackle knows that
his long tail is the most
fabulous of all.
Carolina Parakeet, Ivory-billed Woodpecker, Kiwi, Passenger Pigeon
Double-knock unheard
By nary a human ear
Echoes through the woods.
Whadda I win? ;-)
Loggerhead Shrike
Northern Mockingbird
Mourning Dove
Eurasian Collared-dove
Butcherbird so small,
Yet a killer nonetheless.
Your prey has no chance.
A couple of these are tough but I'm going to guess the Loggerhead Shrike, Common Grackle, Mourning Dove and the last one I’m going to take a wild guess and say an Eastern Meadowlark…??
For the mourning dove
A resting place up above
He coos in the day
Northern Mockingbird
Common Grackle
Mourning Dove
Rock Dove
Grackle standing watch
Shiny black feathers perfect
Perching with three friends
I'll go with the majority
Loggerhead Shrike
Northern Mockingbird
Mourning Dove
Eurasian Collared-dove
birds unknown two handfuls
better left in a bush
haiku is a vegetable
When it comes to haiku I don’t have a clue.
I'll buy a copy of the book.
OK, I'm from New England but have a few Florida sightings.
Let's be different and try:
northern mockingbird
great crested flycatcher
white crowned pigeon
mourning dove
Tyrant arcs from treetop tower
Intercepts a feast
Of gossamer dragon’s wing.
I like:
Loggerhead Shrike
Common Grackle
Mourning Dove
Eurasian Collared-dove
And a haiku for you:
Four birds on a wire
Perched precariously high
Balance, strength and skill
If you get a chance, it would be awesome to know what the actual IDs of the birds were, unless you already posted it somewhere and I missed it - I don't think I actually won, but I am curious!
Oggie got here firstest with the mostest! Congrats Oggie! Please send an e-mail to me with your contact info. I'm at

LOVE the haikus, my people!
Thanks!
Sure thing, Rebecca. Oggie had it right. Left to right: loggerhead shrike, boat-tailed grackle, mourning dove, Eurasian collared-dove.
