Making Suet Dough: The Movie

This is a video Zick and I made showing how we (as crazy people) make our suet dough for bird feeding. It also features cameos by Chet Baker, Boston terrier and by Liam Thompson, creeper. Much of the video footage was shot by Phoebe Linnea Thompson.

I hope you like this short how-to video. It felt like we were shooting some weird cooking show for bird watchers.

Thanks for the recipe. We've been planning on kickin' it up a notch here in the Oaks with some home-brew, and this might do the trick. We're hoping to be the first kids on the block to get pileateds at our feeders. . . .

Thank you for not only sharing Julie's revised recipe; but also demonstrating "how to" do it!
Now I wonder if the local feed mill will have chick starter in December? Gonna find out Monday because I'm ready to do this.

Sorry to be contrary, but yes there is. Get a kitchen scale. Electronic scales swap easily between ounces and grams, and once you work out the numbers grams are dead simple. They can be set to zero with any bowl already on them. Figure out - once - the ratio of weights between the ingredients. Then just put the bowl on the scale, zero it, and add whatever ingredient comes next in the right amount. When you get to the next ingredient just hit the zero button on the scale first, then add that one until the weight is reached. No measuring cups to fight with or clean.

Cool vid and tips - thanks for sharing. One question for the cooking challeneged (me).... was the three minutes in the microwave all that was needed, and is there a stiring step midway through heating or anything? With my luck I would have 10 cups of penut lard liquid coating the top of my microwave!
